1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomivicivorus Arnold 1 Hastings Reservation 19 June 1100. With noone in the hole, I went up to check and discovered get another empty, failed nest with no sign of eggs or babies. Since there was a bird in the hole back on the 7th, the nest presumably hatched and failed between then and now. 20 June 1930. Bird in the nest hole - presumably roosting here. 24 June 1600. Noone in hole here in passing. 25 June 1915. Both birds roosting (?) in the nest hole in the granary. 30 June Both birds flushed at 1900 from the hole in the granary; with the ambush set, however, they roosted elsewhere. 1 July 1920. Both birds flushed from the hole up at Big Tree. 6 July 530. At long last I finally pulled a successful ambush up at the Big Tree hole, netting the unbanded ♀, now ♀SDS. I don't know where the ♂ roosted; it was neither here nor in the nest hole. 29 July Most of the territory of this group was burned in yesterday's fire and a few of the large trees used by this group were killed. Their granary, however, was not hurt. The roost hole over at Big Tree that they've used in the past is alright also. They should be in good shape. 2 August Birds seen flying in this direction while walking around the Arnold. 4 August 920. 1 bird in the granary; flushed when I approached. 7 August 1045. Up in the forestry area above the granary and back toward A3 were ①♀W/LP#SDS, plus (independently) an unbanded ♀. No apparent sign of the ♂. 26 August 1140. ♀SDS seen in the '75 nest area. 16 September 810. Some rather insistent calling here, but it stopped when I actually arrived. No stores here as yet.
