Melanerpes formicivorus
Valhalla
(18 June) calls from up here. Returning, I saw 2 birds over in the trees across the ravine from the nest tree, one of whom was an unbanded ♀. They preened for a few minutes and then flew off up the hill. This is not good evidence, I realize, but is at least some indication that the ♀ is probably unbanded here. The big question remains as to whether ♂183 is involved here or not.
1700. Went up to the nest where all 3 eggs had hatched. However, nest attendance has clearly been near zero as 2 were dead (wt: 3.7gm and 2.8gm) and the 3rd so barely alive that I removed him to try and revive him elsewhere.
20 June Watching at the R1-Valhalla interface. See R1 notes.
1100. A sudden flurry produced 3 (?) birds here in the vicinity of the granary, one of whom I think was being chased. They all flew over to the trees across the gully and proceeded to hawk over there. One was ♂own-at/DA #222. A ♀ was with him; my look at her was poor but she may have been unbanded.
1110. #222 sitting up there by himself now.
1114. #222 flew up & past the nest tree over to the other side of the hill (see back).
1135. ♀ here again briefly.
1145. #222 is now in a snag way up the hill almost to ARF.
1200. Going to check up the hill.
1230. After chasing these birds around for awhile between the nest tree and ARF I'm convinced that 1) this is a real territory, 2) there are most likely only 2 birds here, 3) one is
