1979 Walker D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Bianca Hastings Reservation 2 January Without a ladder I was only able to get a sample of 10 acorns; if it doesn't rain I should return and get some more. 3 January Returned and took another 15 acorns, again replacing them with others. 6 February Bianca is out of stores. I did flush 2 birds from the area, however, so the group is apparently still intact for now, at least. 9 March 1145. Three birds were here in the general storage area. 10 March 915. Watching. It's hard to tell at the moment whether it's about to clear up or fog in, however. Two birds were flushed when I arrived, though. 1015. Nothing. Just moved to better light. 1030. Run out by ants. 11 March 1615. Watching. 1635. Stub up in trees between here and Black Oak. Doesn't look settled. 13 March I think that a corollary of 8321 and 8426 moving here on or about 12 November is likely to be the disappearance of the other 3 8's who used to be here for whatever reasons: Purge: 8214. last seen 21 September 1978; 8412 and 8477, both caught on 28 September, all not seen on 10 December when 2 new 8's from Black Oak were here → Disappeared about 11 November 1979 ± 1 month 23 March Flushed one bird on arrival. Now (1410), one 8 is in sap tree in forest towards Black Oak; a Nuttall's 8 is in the tree checking out the holes but the 8 is worried about me, not her. 1415. Flushed. All I saw was 8m, [321?].
