1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hostings Reservation 18 May 1940. I tried watching roosting again tonight, but the birds shifted around at the last minute and it was impossible to tell who roosted in the nest. In any case, the other birds (and there may have been more than 2) roosted in the '78 nest hole and the '75 nest hole, where ambushes might be in order. 19 May Tonight, employing the direct approach (I sat with the scope as close to the hole [directly below the tree] as possible) I once again was 95% sure that 868 again spent the night in the nest. 8184 was definitely in the hole until late, at which point a 2nd bird went in. Immediately after the 2nd bird got in, a bird poked his head out, looked out for about 10 seconds, and flew off, leaving the 2nd bird in for good. Now, either 868 entered, turned himself around in record time, and then flew off 5 seconds later, or they changed over, leaving 868 in for the night. I consider it highly likely that the latter was the case. 20 May Watched the nest this morning from 900-1200. See compilation on the back. 1940. Tonight, watching directly under the hole again, I was able to be quite certain that 8184 roosted in the nest. In fact, after flushing the 8 out at about 1915, 8184 was the only bird to come to the hole, and he showed no sign of leaving by 1940 (by which time it was dark). 22 May 1940. Tonight I watched again and was able to
