Melanerpes formicivorus
School Hill
(12 April) flew over to the '78 nest hole, flew to next tree, was briefly
joined by a second bird, then flew to sapsucking tree
up by the hide, sapsucked for 10 minutes, returned to
granary, Garricked once or twice, then eventually
flew down the hill. I never got a look at her left leg,
but she was indeed banded and seemed definitely to
have been ♀ white/blue #260 [formerly?] from 1800. Don't
know what's up, of course (remember that #260 may
originally have come from School Hill) but it
looks interesting. #260 "inexplicably" switched groups
once and for all I know may be doing it again.
1240. Leaving. This group should be rechecked soon, however.
1315. #260 Definitely here at 1800, but an intruding ♀
does suggest that she had left for at least awhile this
morning. See 1800 notes.
20 April
1615. Watching.
1630. A ♂ is alone in the perch tree (below the granary area.
1633. A ♀ (♀wnm#260?) flew into tree and sat for several
minutes. Then a 3rd bird started calling off in the forest
toward 1800 which prompted the ♀ to fly off in that
direction and then the ♂ to go over on that side from
the other side, where he'd probably been sapsucking. I didn't
see the 2 together.
1643. ! 2♂♂ together now in the tree off to the side. Now a
chase (whew!). ♀ now on upper side to the S of the hide.
1650. Something definitely up. 3 birds over in S side now;
one appears to be ♂86, another with a billfull of catkins.
