Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 1
Hastings Reservation
5 May
630. Watching. Still lots of activity here. ①♀ Q08-Wn(n)/Or #444
preening in granary. ②♀ Bown(n)/Wn#269. Looks like
these 2 ②♀ are here for good.
640. ②♀ are actively greeting each other. They are the only birds
here in the granary regularly; others are in the vicinity.
650. ③♂ Wn-Red/Da#222 and ④♂ Turm-or #486; one of them again
displayed one of the ②♀ (444?). ⑤♂ Or/Blu-Wn#294.
655. ♂486 is displacing ♀444.
705. The ③♂, it appears, are spending much of their time in the
forest above the granary (roughly in the direction of Valhalla).
I don't know what the attraction is up there, however.
706. ⑥♀ Rub in the VO up above the granary (still-♀Rub
seen here 2 days ago also). There is also apparently
additional activity somewhere up above Valhalla somewhere.
712. The unbanded ♀ is sapsucking in the tree up here.
She seems to be pretty much on her own. She keeps
hamit irg and displaying, but few other birds are
landing here or staying any length of time.
715. Leaving.
6 May
1400. Several birds are by the sycamores along the creek
where the holes are.
1415. ①♀ My Wn-Dr #269. ♂ here also. ♀ showing interest in
the holes here. ②♀444 here also.
1430. ♀444 investigating the same hole now.
11 May
955. At least 2 birds, including a ♀, in the sycamore hole area.
However- note that ♀269 is down at R3 (see R3 notes!)
15 May
1415. At the lip of a hole in the sycamore is ♀269 - inside is a
2nd♀, but at that point Billy Clowdrove by and I missed who it was. something!
