1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fornicivus Lambert Hastings Reservation 25 April 920. A bird hawking from the "middle" tree, the big old VD along the road up between Keep Out and Lambert. 28 April 1155. 2, possibly 3 (1 getting chased) birds here. Some Garricks . 1200. Now 4 birds; chases. At least 1 unbanded bird; also a banded bird. ①♀ or /M#283; ②♂ub. 1203. ♂ drumming. 5 banded (♂ or /Bile or?) getting chased. 1210. Now no longer clear who's chased and chaser between the ♂♂. ♂ is #284! These are the 2 siblings back from last fall! 1215. ♂ub I think is doing more chasing than vice-versa. 1220. Seems like either ♂ is scared of the other; neither is quite sure of itself. 1223. Now ub ♂ chasing ♂284 back and forth. ♂283 pretty passive through all this. A few more Garricks; some, at least, being given by ♂284. Also, now he's doing some chasing. 1230. Well- quite interesting. Two returnees, and several questions- will the 2 sibs inbreed? (I think not- it's close but ♂ub seems to have the upper hand) Will ♂284 stay anyway, even if ♂ub takes over? Quite exciting. 1231. All 3 next to each other (9 in between ♂♂) eating catkins, but the ♂♂ are not at all happy with each other! 1235. ♂ub definitely ahead- ♂284 doing most of the Garricking and getting chased; ♂ub with ♀ more often. These are clearly the only main participants here. 29 April 1900. Nobody roosting here, as best as I could tell, on this cool, fogged-in evening. No sign seen from any of the standard rules.
