1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. Calif. 27 April 1600. Ron and I wandered down to Corral Viejo Canyon this afternoon to check out the group there. Basically we found little: no birds were found looking out of holes and only a few calls were heard denoting the existence of any Wickerbills. Both the 2 main canyon groups appear to be out of stores now as well, as befits a year which is as bad as this one. 29 April 1545. 2 AW up at Red House, landing in the Blue Oak in front for several minutes before continuing up the dump road toward the Melin Ranch. 4 May 930. Up at P.O. Hill #1, there are several birds, some of whom (at least) are banded. Seen were (1)♂ Or/Or-#374 (seen a few days ago at R3-one of the 1977 babies here) and (2)♀ DB/Or ? -> ♀ Blue/Or (both DBs maybe LBlue) 950. 3rd bird: (3)♂ Wn1 Red-Wn #377 (another of the '77 babies). 950. (4)♂ ub displaced by 3377 from a tree (clearly 8ub was an intruder). A fair amount of waking up here. There are at least 3 and possibly 4 birds here: 1025. The mystery ♀ was just displaced by 3374. The ♀ is acting new-avidly greeting the ♂ at every opportunity. 1200. Leaving. Looks like only 3 birds here-the two ♂6 ♂8 on their natal territory and an outside ♀ who hopefully I'll be able to identify with what I've got on her. The rest of the way I saw some birds but got no good looks and saw none in any holes. I stopped at The Revolution Group (nothing), checked PO Hill #2, and then went by PO Hill #3 (several birds, some activity, but none in any holes) see below (P.6
