1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation (15 October) grand total of 3 feedings, both by 8402 (bolus size of 2 both times; insects). Neither of the other 2 birds came by at all. After this I counted stores: Tree 1: 3 ? 196 Tree 2: 193 Later, on the way down, I flushed a bird by the old granary down from the field who flew off toward Y. Then, while passing at Y, I heard a bird calling who turned out to be 8280 (see Y notes). I still wish I could get some better data on the nest up here. 19 October Watched here from 1230-1640, finally getting some feeding visits. Both babies appeared to be looking out of the hole (alternately); the time for fledging is definitely near. See compilation on back. 20 October Watched here again from 900-1200. Both babies are definitely here, but won't be for much longer. 0.00 Watching - 28.00. 886 - 34.50. 8[illegible] (acorns-3) - 38.00 8 - 40.10. 8 - 50.40. 8 (acorns-3) - 52.30. 8 (" -3) - 54.00. 8 (" -3) - 55.30. 8 (" -3) - 57.55. 8 ("") - 7.30. 8 - 8.55. 8 - 9.00. 8402 (acorns-3) - 16.35. 8 - 25.10. 886 acorns-3 - 28.45. 8402 (acorns-3) - 31.45. 8 (acorns-3) - 34.55. 8 (insects-2) - 37.45. 886 - 38.00. 8 - 38.10. 8402 - 42.15. 886 42.50. 8402 - 50.00. 886 - 51.05. 8 - 52.20. 8402 - 52.40. 8 - 54.45. 8402 (acorns-2) - 56.15. 8402 - 57.55. 8 - 58.20. 8402 - 1.50. 8 (acorns-3) - 8.10. 886 - 11.40. 886 - 12.30. 8402 (insect-2) - 13.05. 886 - 15.10. 886 - 15.20. 8 - 18.35. 886 (insects-2) 19.30. 8402 (insects-2) - 22.00. 886 (acorns-2) - 48.45. 8260 - 48.50. 8402 (insect) - 49.35. 8402 (acorns) - 50.10. 8 - 50.40. 8402 (acorns) - 51.55. 8 - 53.05. 8402 - 57.35. 8 [Here 8 dipped in several times over a period of ~45 sec. apparently not able to feed the baby of her choice (?)] N times acorns seen fed: 14 N times insects seen fed: 6 (most of the unknown feeding visits are probably insects also!)
