1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 Hastings Reservation 27 June 1030. Checked stores, but they are clearly out or very nearly so as I could only find 2 that looked intact. Also, the '78 nest hole appears to have been or is being appropriated by a hive of Honey Bees. 11 July 1155. Both j#492 and j#493 in the remains of the willow gramany at Pump. No sign of the adults here, however. 15 September 910. None seen here in passing. 9 October 1015. Watching. 1035. (1) j♂ or 1♀? #492 in trees along creek, 80m down. Also here are (2) ♂ wn, l#298, (3) j♂ L8/18 #493, (4) ♂ DB, l#297. The 2 adult ♂♂ are together; both juns still have ♂-plumage and are almost certainly ♂. 1045. [illegible] (5) ♀ M or-wm #435 here also. All 5 accounted for. All are in the Valley Oak here "in" 180D's territory. Meanwhile, there are some other birds further down the creek as well as some activity up at 180D itself. 1052. Leaving to watch at 180D. 28 October 1130. Counted stores: Tree 1: 264 } Tree 2: 825 } 1089 Getting there, but still lots of space here. 6 November 1205. (1) ♂298, (2) ♂493, plus 2-3 others harvesting acorns near and apparently storing in 180D's old nest tree on the other side of the knoll. This area is clearly still now part of 150D after all. 9 November 1400. Walking by here I noticed that the large horizontal limb of Tree 2 here has fallen—certainly since 28 Oct. and probably within the last 2-3 days. Fortunately, it is propped up partially by the limb below it; thus many of the acorns stored here
