Melanerpes formicivorus
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif.
15 February 1300. Walked up along Robertson Creek, checking for birds,
especially where the pair had lived a couple of winters ago.
I didn't see anyone, but an alarm call given in response
to a Cooper's Hawk sounded identical to that of a Wickerbill.

16 February Today Pan and I walked over to Corral Viejo Canyon.
The first group there (where the nest was predated last year)
has quite a few stores. The second (where I banded the babies)
is essentially out, though I did flush a bird from there.
There were also at least 3 birds at the 3rd territory - the big
Valley Oaks on the Hastings side of the creek - but no stores

Also today Winnie (our captive) Drummed several times
on our back porch - the first time I've ever heard her to that.
17 February Winnie drummed a couple more times today.
19 February Ron and I went up Poison Oak Hill this morning, seeing

stores in any of the groups anywhere on the hill. It's
clearly quite bad up here, though we just went up the
spine to the top and did not check the groups off on
the Southern side where there are several good granaries.

with some beautiful large Valley Oaks; some of these were
granaries with acorns stored but in general the stores
