Hastings Reservation
13 June Much to my astonishment, I walked up here about 1015
only to find a β in the hole I checked back on 1 June
who would not come out! This called for immediate
investigation, so at 1500 I returned, flushed out the
bird, opened the hole, and found 3 incubated eggs.
This, then, is a first—the first time this territory has ever
truly been occupied, at least as far as I know. It will
also, I think, be very instructive finding out who in fact
lives here, and what there relations are to RI "proper".
For example, the bird I flushed out flew straight down
the hill and over toward Poison Oak Hill, right through
RI's area. What is going on, I wonder?
17 June 1300. Since nothing was learned about this group in
my absence, I'm now watching in hopes of finding out
something about who's here. So far, no one looked out
when I arrived or while setting up the hide.
