Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
(19 April) Counted stores: 206.
24 April
1545.♂ in a hole in the Valley Oak in the central area -
could very well be the first nest of the year.
25 April
1030. ☐ Nobody in the hole where I saw a bird yesterday, but
I went up anyway (not an easy feat by any means) and
opened the hole (even harder), confirming that there is
nothing in it as yet. The holes up on this limb are difficult.
1110. Own/4e #102 and at least 2 others over on the other side
of the forest (the Brianca side).
28 April
900. Watching. None in the local holes on arrival. Also none
in the sap tree right at the moment.
915. ☐♂ Red-tip/Bile-tail #320 now here sapsucking. This bird is
definitely here.
950. Several birds in the rear of the forest here. One appears
to be ☐♀ Red (m#427). Also 2 ☐♂. My look at this ☐ was fleeting,
but I think it was valid.
955. ☐320 back sapsucking.
1015. Birds are over by Brianca. Leaving.
1018. Just as I said that ☐♂ or-wn #426 and ☐♂ M #321
come in to sap suck.
1030. Leaving.
1031. Once again birds show up as I prepare to depart.
This time I got another brief but convincing view at
♀ Red/M#427 and also a ♂ who I called as ☐♂ Lg-Blk/M,
most likely ☐428 (with ☐427). Looks like most
everyone is still here after all. Now (1035) I'm leaving
for sure to check over at Brianca, however (which is
the direction all these birds are going when they leave).
