1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill 8 May 1400. Nobody in any of the principal holes. 15 May 1345. Still nobody in any holes, even though 1 bird has been roosting in the old nest hole. Note Ron's observation of all 3 birds (inc. 8402) here on 11 May. 19 May 1045. None in any holes here. A 8 sitting up in the top of the first tree of the enclosure, however. 20 May 1900. Larry reported a bird in the '75-77 nest hole this morning, so I checked it, and sure enough they have 4 eggs. 23 May 745. 8 in hole. Also in the hole were the same 4 eggs, which I measured and returned. 27 May Ambushed the non-nest hole (last year's nest hole) and nabbed 8260 and 8402 this morning. Thus, I presume that 886 roosted in the nest last night, plus with [illegible] the markings I added to the birds; hopefully we'll be able to tell who roost here in the future as well. 28 May Watched the nest today from 1045-1335. The old 8 (886) didn't show up at all. 31 May Watched the hole here from 630-930. The young have definitely hatched here (Nancy, as it turns out, noted feeding visits last night). See compilation on back. 3 June 1730. Checked the nest, where there are 3 babies and no sign of the 4th egg. 7 June Watched the nest from 1600-1715 but saw nothing after inadvertently flushing a brooding bird (probably 8402!) out of the nest after 30 minutes! I did check stores, and honestly can find none that remain intact. → Ω. (go to p.7)
