1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 4 Hastings Reservation (21 June) top of Blouquist Knoll this morning. Otherwise, however, these birds continue to keep themselves quite scarce. 23 June Pam reports having seen a ♂ at the Lower Barn about 1000. 26 June 700. A bird flushed from the lower Barn over to the hole in the Blue Oak ('75 nest tree). 740. Now here watching. Two birds here by the LBarn. 745. Both have now left. 750. Going for a quick check around. 2 July Though I'm still uncertain what the story is here (there do seem to be birds here occasionally, but they do well at remaining hidden) I will go ahead and (added) add ♀ 397 and an unbanded ♂, moved here on 10 May. 4 July 1630. Bird in locust in front of Lower Barn. 20 July 540. Bird in Pines by John's house; flew to Lower Barn. Now wakes down there between 2 birds. 26 July 1130. Bird at the new hole in the '75 nest tree. 1730. Bird sitting in the dead locust in front of the lower barn. 27 July 1145. Flushed 2 birds up in the Pines by the School House; flew toward the lower barn. 1945. Checked all the known holes at dusk and generally kept an ear open for birds, but didn't hear anyone. 13 September 645. 1 bird, at least, up on the knoll. Lots of acorns up there also. Could be the start of an influx here, at last. 650. ♂ yel/pink # 402 (!) Karrit-cutting here. He may be the only bird here. He definitely would appear to be interested. 17 September Purge: ♀397 and ♂ub. Both last seen 19 May, with fair-poor inferential data to suggest that
