Melanerpes fomicivorus
Arnold!
Hastings Reservation
2 January Took a sample of 25 acorns from the granary, replacing
them with some of my own.
6 February This group is out of stones already, though I did hear some
wakes from down the hill (toward the N & slope) suggesting
that there may still be a group here. I also stuck in a few
acorns of my own in hopes of keeping the group from
dissolving entirely.
9 March Nothing seen around here in passing - no sign of life.
10 March 1115. A call here led me to watch for 20 min. or so in the hopes of
seeing somebody, but noone appeared.
1118. Aha - across the road in the Valley Oak: ?
Don't know who that could be offhand.
1127. A ? was here, then went across the road and off to some
meeting place back there.
1135. Fog coming in; I'm leaving. Somebody apparently still
here, at least.
1150 Found the ? across the road - is definitely ? Yel-Da/Yel-DA #?
This bird will have to be found again.
11 March 1515. Watching. I need to find out who that ? is.
1600. Couldn't find anyone anywhere here. Have to try again.
1700. See Black Oak notes for shenanigans here. After this episode
I discovered at least 2 and very possibly 3 birds were
sitting in the granary here: the only one I saw well was
an unbanded ? ; a 2nd bird was a ?. Once again, there is
more work in store, but it would appear as though a complete
turnover (=abandonment followed by recolonization) has taken
place here.
