Melanerpes formicivorus
Haystack-Blomquist Hastings Reservation
12 May 1700. There is at least one intruder, a ♀, getting chased
by 2 other birds in the granary area.
16 May 1700. Nobody seen in any of the holes or in passing.
18 May 1650. Since I haven't seen any birds in the old nest hole for
months now, I opened it up to check it out of pure curiosity
this afternoon. The verdict is that it appears fine: there was
a little clutter of pieces of bark and so forth at the bottom
but there were no obvious residents or other obstructions
to its use by the Wickers. However, I was intrigued by the
fauna that I pulled out with each small handful of
bottom debris, including a pillbug or two and especially
lots of bird-lice (Mallophagae I suspect) similar, as far
as I could tell, to those which infest my birds and their
babies.
2 June 915. No one in any of the known holes here or seen in passing.
6 June 1700. " " " " " "
10 June 1450. No stores left here as far as I can tell. Also
no one seen in passing.
20 June 1645. After sitting here for 45 min. in an attempt to nail some
Starlings I finally heard a call and saw one AW sitting
in one of the trees just down from the granary.
21 June 1925. In passing I saw a ♀ here and ♂ or /m #173. Both are
apparently still here and well.
27 June 1015. Flushed a bird from a Live Oak (apparently sap-sucking) in the
Buckeye forest over on Blomquist
3 September 1600. No one in any holes here.
22 September 745. Watching. At least 2 birds in the area.
