1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiceivorus Blomone 10 May 1600. Checked the hole, which has 3 fresh eggs in it! Finally something is up. Also, as far as I can tell there are a few stored acorns left here; at least there are a few intact ones (though possibly rotten) left in the granary. Certainly not enough to last much longer, however 11 May Watched here 635-900. Only 8479 incubated all morning (Larry watched 900-1200). Also, there is unfortunately some doubt as to whether or not 8301 exists any more - thus possibly there is but not a pair here. See back for compilation. 1700. Opened nest - still 3 eggs. This evening Ron and Larry reported 2 birds roosting in the nest - either there are 2 88 here or... the F spent the night in the nest, too! 12 May 1930. Two birds definitely roosted in the nest hole tonight, much as Ron and Larry reported last night. 13 May Watched here from 1600-1815. Only 2 birds, 8479 and a banded F, (Fm/#478), were seen. It would appear that the F is spending the night in the nest! See back for today's compilation. 16 May 1800. Bird in hole 18 May 720. Watching nest. -2000. Begin. 8478 in nest. -22.30.
