1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiceivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation (1 September) [transcribed notes]: 1753. (8260 just flew up to the SH'B' tree, near where 8402 was sitting). No vocalizations. 8 hopped up her limb. Both sitting quietly ~10' apart. *→ 1754. 8 flew off to trees. 8402 did not follow. Still in granary. 1755. 8402 flew off to same area where 8 went. 1757. 886 in SH'B' granary by himself. 1800. 2nd bird [8260] flew in low to a low limb below the 8. Wakas (soft) between 886 & 8260. 1801. 8402 flew in and landed right above 886. Both sitting right next to each other: 886 8402(horizontal) *→ 1810. 8402 flew down to 8 - 886 followed immediately behind him. Missed the exact interaction but both 88' flew off within 5 secs. Could have been a broken up mounting attempt. 8 remains. 1817. 8 still sitting low in tree. *→ 1820. Proof! All 3 birds low in the tree together. Both 88 flew off again within seconds. 1822. 886 low in tree; 8402 high in tree; 8 high in a separate part of the tree. 1823. 8 disappeared. 886 gone too. 8402 still here; 886 here also. *→ Now 8 back, right next to 8402. 8402 gave a few soft wakas, 886 flew up right away, almost "herded" 8402 away from the 8 but w/o physical contact. 1829. All have disappeared. 1838. All 3 flew off to top of SH field ( ) in fair 'pack' style. 1830. The 2 8's in the big Valley Oak at the top. Both apart. No sign of the 8. *→ 1835. 8402 flew off to the W. forest; 886 followed immediately.
