1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. 1 July 750. A pair of AW were up at Red House, but flew off up the canyon toward the Melin Ranch before I could see anyone's legs. 1115. Bird still in the hole at Corral Viejo #1 - a nest for sure. No other signs of reproduction noted over there, however. 4 July 1500. Over at Corral Viejo #1 the babies have hatched. We started to saw open the hole, but as expected it is quite thick and after an hour or so we temporarily abandoned the attempt. On the way over, we flushed 2 birds at the 2nd canyon, one or near the mouth and a 2nd up near the fence line. Ron saw birds here yesterday as well (18ub, other?) and even watched roosting last night (there's a nice hole in a Blue Oak right in the canyon down from the fence line) but obtained no more definite information. 6 July 1600. Back at Corral Viejo #1 I finally got the hole opened in order to measure the babies, of whom there are 2: ① DP wt: 50.0g wl: 21.0mm ② No band wt: 48.9g wl: 21.5mm 8 July 645. Checked ARF,TOD on the way down from the Arnold and flushed a bird from the tall tree by the granaries, presumably indicating that there are birds here again. 18 July 1845. Banded and bled the babies at Corral Viejo #1 (see 6 July): ① DP → #513 wt: 89.6g wl: 83mm ② Nub → #514 wt: 92.8 wl: 84mm 22 July Went up to PO Hill #1 this afternoon when I heard some birds but did not note any sign of nesting in the known holes.
