(10 November) Acorns Wdpkrs are happy to eat "grubs" when they come across them by scarfing 2 weevils down which she found crawling around the bowl of acorns we have for her on the kitchen table.
November 1230. Over on Lambert's, both Bar-b-q and (especially) Near Lambert are full of stored acorns. I didn't see a single bird while wandering around, however.
November 1130. At Blountwo there are enough stores stuffed away to convince me there are birds here, even though I don't know who. Possibly it would be worth checking roosting here.
November Walked up Poison Oak Hill late in the morning, as far as the Revolution territory, noting 1) 2 birds and plenty of stores at PO Hill #1; 2) there are even stores in the Valley Oak along the ridge heating up to the Revolution territory; and 3) there are plenty of stores in the granary at the Revolution territory itself. Birds were not if great evidence but we did flush and/or hear several in scattered locations around the area. It would certainly be worth spending a day up here looking for banded birds when I get the chance.
November 1330. Up over the top of Buckeye Hill, every granary (4 or so that I saw) has acorns. Furthermore, in the large territory in the saddle area just over the top (with the large dead snag out in the open) I found a recently fledged baby (dark eye, yellow edge to bill) sitting up in a tree, and heard the high-pitched karrit of what sounded like another one off in the forest! These birds clearly had a successful fall nest. Before leaving I saw 2 late (fall) babies and 2 (maybe 3) unbanded adults - a ♂ and a ♀. Interesting group!
