1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Resenation 4 February So far my periodic checks here have given me no reason to suspect anybody of living here so far this year. 12 April Still no indication of rebirth here. 20 April 1020. On the knoll are 3 birds, apparently the 1500 birds—at least 8297 was identified and the other 2 appeared to be his. 1028. Now some fighting on knoll by the next tree—8297 chasing 1 or 2 other birds. 1030. Pub here. 8297 interested in the hole in the trunk. 1035. These 2 birds here, possibly no one else. Not clear what's up. 23 April Pam reports seeing an Acorner fly up to the pine trees by the School House this morning. 29 April 800. 3 birds up by the '75 nest tree (on the knoll) making a racket. 805. Birds are somewhere on the other side of the knoll now. 806. Pub here now looking into the hole. Possibly birds are finally getting interested here. 5 May 1305. A bird just flushed from mid-Blonquist knoll. 6 May 815. 3 birds were along the Dump Road just down from the Davis' and up from the 9. 10 May 1015. Larry advised me that there are 2 birds here on the knoll— an ub 8 and a banded 8. I'm now watching and there is indeed activity here. ① Pub. Examining the new hole in the '75 nest tree. Hopping around in the tree now. One resize appears to be broken and sticks out at an odd angle in his back.
