1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation 29 April 1850. Noone seen in any of the holes here, but again bird(s) were roosting in the hole at UA2 which I suspect are these birds. Add: ♂126. Seen here on 4 July 1978 after abandoning LA2 about mid-June. Not seen on 15 October, ☐ 8 December, ☐ 9 March, ☐ or 14 April, but here on 25 April. This is a long time to have missed this bird, but it isn't unprecedented. In any case, without any solid evidence to the contrary I think I simply have to reinstate this bird as having been here since he abandoned LA2 on 15 June 1978. This is somewhat unsatisfactory but is the simplest resolution to the entire dilemma. 5 May 600. Checked holes; no sign of anyone inside any. 7 May 1340. No one in any holes; 1 ♀ sapsucking; all quiet. 12 May 38123 and 126 at Blanca, acting as though they wish to try again. 14 May ♀289 up at Lambert. Otherwise, nobody seen at A3 itself in passing and all was quiet 17 May 1015. No one in any holes here except for the '76 nest hole, where there were 5 Starling eggs and a nest. These were all summarily cleared out. 23 May 910. Nobody here, but there does appear to be some activity over by UA2. Checking the granary, I found only 15 intact-appearing acorns. They are clearly just about out. 29 May 1055. Noone in any holes here or at UA2 (has taken over the '76 nest hole again!)
