1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 Hastings Reservation 21 January 1330. Flushed 3 birds from here inc. ♂ 298 and ♂ 297 (for sure). 12 March 930. Watching. ⚪♂️ yel-DG/Ar #297 flushed from Tree 1 on arrival. 945 ⚪♂️ 46-264/46-44#298 here, flew to '78 nest hole possibly to shag off a Bluebird who had been checking it out. 948. Both ♂297 and ♂298 in Tree 1 now. No sign of 3rd bird. 1002. ♂297 and ♂298 now in Tree 3 together. Still no sign of ♀888. 1030. Looks bad for ♂888. Also no ♀ here yet. Counted stores: Tree 1: 436 7 708. Tree 2: 272 14 March 1805. 2 (1 bird already roosting in '78 nest hole. 27 March Ron watched here today and saw only ♂8297 and 298. At least one bird roosted in the granary as well. R April 1300. ♂8297, 298 with a banded ♀ here at the "nest" tree of 1800 (actually more part of 1500 for some time now) see 1800 notes. The ♀ here with the ♂ is ♀435 - banded at a Resolution at Plaque on 24 April 1978 (and seen down at the Pump several times right afterwards, I believe). A good find! Purge: ♂888. Last seen 31 December 1978, gone by 12 March (also note that "3" birds were seen here on 21 January): Disappeared about 15 February ± 2 weeks. Add: ♀435. Not here 27 March, apparently in by today → Moved to 1500 as adult 2 April (±1 week). 13 April 1045. These birds are over at 1800 again, eating catkins and possibly sapsucking in the forest next to the chaparral. 288 (♂297 for sure) and a ♀ were seen as 2 of them flew over
