1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation 1 April 1720. ♀️ in granary Kamit-cutting and even giving a Garrick or two, but no one seems to be responding. 1728. For the last 3 minutes I kept track of how many displays the ♀️ made. Only 2 were given, Kamit and a full Kamit-cut (with only 2 Kamit-cut-cuts). The count: min 1 min 2 min 3 Total Kamit 20 21 17 58 Kamit-cut 4 2 8 14 And still no sign of the ♂️, who has conceivably bit the dust since his fight on 25 March (but no other new ♂️ here yet either). 12 April Add: ♀️6 here: Not here 17 Feb., acting quite new on 25 March → Moved here (age unknown) — [illegible] — about 20 March. 1630. There appear, to the best that I am able to discern, to be essentially no stores remaining here (there are a very few "whole" acorns, but not more than 5 that look as though they might in fact be edible). 1634. Poof! ♂️ appeared here, saw me and got scared, flew to '77 nest hole and went in for safety. In a few days, I'll get her at that hole! No ♂️ offhand. 1636. Take that back - ♀️ flew to sap tree, wherein sits ♂️ORW#307. Good! 13 April 1900. One bird roosted in the Granary (where an ambush is ready) and it did not appear to have a wingstreamer. No sign of the second bird, however.
