1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo Hastings Reservation 16 May 1745. I saw at least 2 birds here, inc. a banded ♀ apparently not #485, but I was not able to determine anything definite. In any case, there was noone in any of the holes (including a new one I discovered). However, there were birds in the area. 18 May 940. These birds continue to baffle me. This time I again saw 2 birds, at least one of whom was banded: ?♀ yel-Blk/yel-Blk ?? (not #480). Noone in any holes. 2 June 900. Noone in any of the holes here. 6 June 1600. " " " " 23 June 1130. Flushed a bird from the '78 nest hole - from which young baby rasps were coming! Serves me right for ignoring these guys for 2½ weeks! 1700. Opened hole: 3 babies; 2 healthy and 1 looking in poor shape. 1720. Watching from up the hill. 1825. Nobody's been to the nest yet, but there is ⚫♀ub preening, etc., over in a Valley Dale by the dirt road. 1833. Now over in the same area: ⚫♀ Mauve/Blk-Wht(♀) #485. 1845. Leaving. Not an overwhelming success, but the birds who are supposed to be here (with the exception of #480) appear to be those who actually are here. 24 June 1145. Watching hole. A bird left it as (when) I arrived. 1208. Leaving the hole: ⚫♀ub. 1213. ⚫ub at the hole again. 2nd bird in the vicinity. 1225. ⚫♀ Brewyn #485 in granary area. Possibly a 3rd bird here also. 1245. Leaving. Still no clear sign of #480 or other 3rd bird. 1 July 1030. Checked the nest, where the 2 healthy babies are fine. The 3rd (go to p. 4)
