1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Bianca Hastings Reservation (23 March) 1430. Noone's returned here yet but this is probably the place to watch. 24 March 1615. Ron watching here. 19 April The 2 Black Oak 3's who had moved to here (?) seen back at Black Oak. See Black Oak notes. 1140-1210. No sign of life over here. 22 April 1135. Nobody seen here in passing. I also checked the holes and found nothing. 24 April 1450. Watching. Is anybody here? Or has this group bit the dust? 1530. No sign of anyone here. Could be the end for Bianca, at least for the time being. 25 April 1110. Several birds on the upper edge of the territory here, apparently Black Oak birds (one, 8'102, identified). 28 April Nobody seen here in passing, though the Black Oak birds are all over in the upper side of the forest here still. I also checked holes but found nothing. 29 April 1840. No sign of any roosting birds here on this foggy evening. Purple: 8'141, 8'321, 8'426. All here on 10 December 1978, this group ran out of stores about the end of January 1979. However, 3 birds were seen here on 9 March and 2 flushed on 10 March. All apparently gone (8'321, 8'426 to Black Oak; 8'141??) by 19 April. → Abandoned about 30 March ± 2 weeks This territory is presently unattended. 6 May 1235. A 8', probably banded, here. Flushed from the tree on the knoll by LA2 it flew to the Black Oak nest tree; sat; then flew off.
