1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate Hastings Reservation (26 April) Also Purge: ♂467. Last seen 9 February, gone by 25 February, → Disappeared about 17 Feb. ± 1 week. Ron noted 3 birds (at least) roosting in the high hole up in the Westgate sycamore tonight. 4 May 6 May 17 May The birds have been hanging around here, especially the Wgate tree, but none has been in any of the holes lately. 28 May 1700. 4 birds were here in the Gate sycamore making some racket. 9 June 1650. Bird in the nice hole in the Gate sycamore! 10 June 1420. None in the hole this time around. 2 July Purge: ♂258. Last seen 25 February, gone by 2 April → Disappeared about 15 March ± 2 weeks. 11 September 1700. Bird in hole in Gate Sycamore. A nest?? 12 September 1500. Checked hole with mirror. The bottom was very hard to see, but I was fairly confident it was empty. 15 September 850. None in the Gate tree. 8 November 1440. ♂♂ noleg #58 eating an acorn atop Wgate sycamore. 1400. Atop the Gate sycamore are ♂♂ nolga #58 and ♀♀ Pub. Counted stores: Gate syc: 0 Wgate syc: 478 18 December 1215. Counted stores: Gate syc: 0 Wgate syc: 1095 The Gate tree remains unused while the Wgate tree is stuffed. I also saw ♂ Pub while over counting at the Wgate sycamore. 26 December 1300. Took a sample of 50 acorns out of the Wgate granary and replaced them with ones of my own.
