1979 Walter D. Koerzig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 12 June 1315. Checked and measured the babies, all 3 of whom are fine, and moved the photocell device down next to the hole and almost in place to activate. 13 June 1315. Checked the babies again, who are still fine. They hadn't gained much weight, however, so I moved the device back up several inches just to be on the safe side while I'm gone. 18 June 1550. Despite the fact that the babies were getting fed as of 2 days ago (see Nancy's notes), the nest has failed. All 3 babies were in the nest, quite starved. Even though it would appear as though the camera contraction was not the cause of this failure, it's clear that I can't trust it yet at this point. In any case, this nest is defunct. 3 July Change: #402. First seen here on 20 April, at which time he appeared "new." *Returned ~ 20 April. 31 August 1300. On my way back from School Hill West I decided I should check here just in case. Et voilà - a bird flushed out of the nest hole, which contained 2 cold eggs! The 1980 breeding season is on! 1 September See Ron's notes concerning his watch this morning, which included seeing the ♀ go in and lay the 3rd egg. Later in the afternoon Nancy put in a watch as well. 1715. Watching. Nothing at the moment. 1740. 21 bird up at SH "B." Going up. None when I arrive. 1750. Still zero. Going back down to main area. Non! 003'yd/DP #402 up here by himself. 1753. Joined by #260. Subsequent observations put on tape as follows: (go to p.9)
