Melanerpes formicivorus
School Hill
Hastings Reservation
12 June
1315. Checked and measured the babies, all 3 of whom
are fine, and moved the photocell device down next to
the hole and almost in place to activate.
13 June
1315. Checked the babies again, who are still fine. They hadn't gained
much weight, however, so I moved the device back up
several inches just to be on the safe side while I'm gone.
18 June
1550. Despite the fact that the babies were getting fed as of
2 days ago (see Nancy's notes), the nest has failed. All 3
babies were in the nest, quite starved. Even though it
would appear as though the camera contraction was not
the cause of this failure, it's clear that I can't
trust it yet at this point. In any case, this nest is
defunct.

eggs! The 1980 breeding season is on!
