Melanerpes formicivorus
Valhalla
Hastings Reservation
26 August 500 500. A successful ambush here netted #222 once
again along with the unbanded ♀, now ♀519.
28 September 1640. Bird in hole here, plus 2nd in vicinity. I didn't hear
anything from in the hole, but they seemed rather upset over
my presence, so I ought to check back here.
5 October 1520. Nobody in hole, but 2 birds in the vicinity. Also a few stores
in the granary.
1525. ♂ wn-red #222 plus a ♀ here together.
14 October 1710. Two birds in the vicinity still, but only a very few stores here.
Once again no serious suggestion of a nest.
2 November 1840. Flushed 2 birds from the granary, which contains all
of 118 acorns!
5 November 1200. Again flush 2 birds from the area: ♂? Silk-yel/Blk #519 and
♂ wn-red #222, as expected.
18 December 1500. Counted stores: 396 (!) Not bad! Also took a
small sample of 21 acorns from a low limb, replacing them
with some of my own. One bird was seen in the area.
I also noted a [new?] possible roost hole in a different part
of the nest tree from where the other holes are. This group
isn't doing so badly at all!
28 December ♀519 apparently moving to Westgate—see WGate notes.
