1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiscivorus Haystack-Blonquist (23 April) Hastings Reservation bird-a ♀! ♀M? ??. Both birds flew to nest tree - 8 to hole, which he entered for 10 seconds and then left. ♀ sat nearby, then began eating catkins. Both stayed here for several minutes. ♀'s legs could not be seen well but she appeared not to be either of the ♀♀ that are supposed to be here. Also, this is the closest thing that's happened yet to suggest that there might be a nesting attempt eventually this year. 26 April 1700. Watching, but noone in the vicinity. 1730. Leaving. Nothing at the moment. 1740. Still here - and all of a sudden excitement! ♂or/Blk#173 here with a ♀: ♀8 Pink-Yel/Black? 484? Seen well (esp. R leg). Several other birds here - all in Live Oaks above 1800 (across from Nest tree) eating catkins and ?sapsucking? ♂% OrW#307 from L.Hay here also, not getting chased as far as I can tell (♂307 and ♂173 are, of course, brothers). Possibly a couple others here also, but no chasing or broo-ha-ha. ♀ above is ♀484 from Gazebo. I wonder what she's up to? 29 April Purge: ♀247.
