1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus BlackOak HastingsReservation (7 June) back of this (p.6) page. The F, by the way, continues to not be seen at all. 2000. Watched roosting here tonight. In essence nothing at all happened - when I arrived at 1930, 8102 (by facial pattern) was in the hole looking out, and he never left. Nor did I even hear any birds elsewhere. Thus, I suppose there may have been somebody else besides 8102 in the hole, but he, at least, definitely roosted there. [illegible] roosted in nest 8 June Watched the nest here from 800-1030. Things looked even worse here than usual - only 1 feeding, and even that one was apparently not complete (the bird exited with some of the food he entered with). I have to wonder again about this nest. See the compilation, as it were, on the back. 1950. Tonight, as far as I could tell, no one was in the roost hole when I arrived nor did anyone enter it. Thus, I would no longer count on this nest being extant. Once again I didn't hear nor see any birds roosting anywhere else here, either. 9 June 1630. Went up to the hole just to confirm that the nest has failed, and lo and behold what greeted me but crampant begging sounds from (at least!) 2 babies! Once again these birds manage to astound me! 11 June Watched the nest from 1330 to 1530 and never saw a bird. The babies apparently continue (?) to subsist on aerial plankton, if at all. 1950.
