Melanerpes formicivorus
School Hill West
Hastings Reservation
30 August With an ambush set here, both birds came, but somehow
sensed some difficulty and thus went off and roosted
elsewhere in the same tree.
15 September 835. No sign of anyone here in passing.
29 September 1115. Two birds flushed from the granary as I approached, but
no sign of stores yet or of a nest.
15 October 1140. No sign of birds or stores (!) observed in passing. I
take it back: I do see 1 stored acorn over here after all.
13 November 1720, Bird roosting in the hole in the Black Oak; it may very
well be ambush find again.
15 November 600. Another successful ambush netted me the (presumably) 2
birds here, an adult ♂ and ♀, now 8530 and 9531. The
granary here is also doing fairly well as far as stored acorns
go; this group appears to be in fairly decent shape.
16 December 1630. There are a fair number of stores here but the granary is
nowhere full; I'd estimate <500, probably the 400-500 range.
No sign of any birds in passing.
