Melanerpes fomiceivorus
Gazebo Hastings Reservation
22 January 1600. Flushed 18ub, 19ub, plus a 3rd bird from here. At least
there is still a group here.
1605. Walked down and flushed a 4th bird from the '77
nest hole - where this group is ripe for ambushing, I would say.
24 January 630. My ambush mostly failed, but I did at least get
1 bird (out of 3 in the hole and ≥4 in the group), an adult
♂, now #480.
16 February Flushed 4 birds from the area in passing this afternoon.
13 March At dusk, 4 birds were definitely here. However, just as it
was getting dark, one flew off to a big oak nearby while
the others (after some spirited kamit-cutting in response
to a Great-horned Owl that flew into a nearby tree)
all roosted in the hole I was ready for. I then walked
over to where I'd seen the 4th bird go and actually
flushed him, but he merely flew off elsewhere rather
than show any inclination to join the others.
14 March 600. This time I was a success, getting all 3 of the birds.
This included #480 as well as 2 adult (=non-first-year) ♀♀,
now #484 and #485. All were processed and released by
about 645.
12 April 1600. No stores here anymore. Nobody flushed on our arrival,
but we did here some calls nearby and I left Larry here
to see what he could find.
19 April 1700. Nobody seen in passing.
26 April #484 seen up at Haystack-Blonquist. See Hay-Blom notes.
29 April Purge: #484. Moved to watched group (Hay-Blon) on
19 April ± (week (see Haystack-Blonquist notes).
