Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation
2 January
Counted stores: 652. I also took a sample of 25 acorns
(all of which appeared to be in marginal shape at best) and
replaced them with a set of good acorns.
4 February
1510. Watching.
1610. No sign of anybody. Pulling their old disappearing
act, apparently.
10 February
1450. Watching. Checked the sap area but found no sign of
birds or active sap holes.
1455. Just found them: 08 OrRW #307 sapsucking over in a tree
by the knoll. A long way from here but I'll watch for the other
before moving anywhere.
1520. 8307 definitely by himself down there. Leaving
for now to check stores and the sap tree.
Counted stores: 548. Holding in there quite well!
17 February
1515. Watching. 08 307 sapsucking in the Blue Oak.
1530. 8307 still in sap tree. No sign of anyone else here. 8390 would
definitely appear to be gone.
13 March
Purple: 8390. Last seen 11 December 1978, gone by 10 Feb.,
Disappeared about 10 January 1979 ± 1 month.
25 March
1100. 8 OrRW #307 here in the Valley Oak above the granary.
Also, something may be going on here.
1110. A 2nd 8, banded but with no WS, landed here with a beetle
and was displaced by 8307. 8307 then chased him over to
the granary, where they were joined by a 3rd bird, a 8,
while the 8 was still being displaced.
1116. 8 here calls regularly, looks at home. Is unfortunately
unbanded, I fear.
