Melanerpes formicivorus
Road I
Hastings Reservation
3 June
7:50. Bird in the hole in the sycamore again.
18:30. Mustering previously unheard of levels of
fortitude, bravery, cunning, and foolhardiness, I managed
to get up to the hole this evening with the help
of Larry, the 16' step ladder, and the 40' extension
ladder. (see back). This amazing feat yielded the
information that these birds have 4 eggs - apparently the
product of only 1 ♀.
4 June
Watched the nest here from 7:30-10:30, noting 8486, 8294,
but mostly 8269. See compilation on back.
10:45. Some Garricks and activity over by the granary. Watching.
①♀ Yel-Bik/Yel #383 (a "R3 ♀"). Several birds here. ②8486 greeting
③8269. 8269 above 8383 on the limb here but not chasing her.
I don't actually know who is instigating the broo-ha-ha here, unless
it's 8383 plus maybe 1 or 2 other of the R3 ♀♀.
11:00. Focus of activity has shifted. I'm leaving.
5 June
