1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Hastings Reservation (18 May) 900. Leaving. Still no sign of 8301, who is most likely gone. Note the unbanded intruders (18 and 18) seen at 37.00-41.40. 24 May 1715. Checked the nest, where all 3 babies have hatched. 26 May 1500. Checked the babies, who were all fine until I removed a band from ① Red-DB and mucked up the skin on his leg. I think it will all heal o.k., but it's something to keep in mind in case he unaccountably disappears. 27 May 1545. Checked the babies, who are all doing fine (the wound I inflicted in Red-DB is obvious but healing just fine!) 2 June Watched the nest here from 700-830, seeing only 9478. There was no definite sign of there being 288 here, in any case. The nest was being attended. 13 June 1600. Bled and banded the 3 babies, all of whom are fine, almost identical in weight and wing length, and now #494, 495, and 496. There are no stores remaining here as far as I can tell. The cut sections below the nest hole were crawling with lice. I also found several on the babies, mostly in and around the rump area. 23 June 1140. Passed by here, but didn't see or hear anybody. 24 June 1330. Saw several birds in the area here, but was unable to identify any. 2 July Purge: [illegible] . 8301. Last seen 6 January, gone at least by about 27 April → Dis. about 2 March ±1 month. 23 July 1540. Flushed j494 from the Live Oak sap tree by the road. 3 September 1610. No one in any holes here. 22 September Both 9478 and j496 seen together at Lower Haystack. Molting to 9. See LHay notes.
