1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Valhalla (20 June) 8222, the other, the ♀, may be unbanded but remains elusive. More watching needs to be done here, but at least these birds are spending their time in this area (exclusive) area and not still mixed up directly (or at least constantly) with R1. Note that they also appear to be defending it (see 1100). 21 June 1645. Having set up an ambush at the nest hole, I'm now watching from the hillside. I have heard birds in the vicinity, #3 1715. Giving up for now. 22 June 400. Even though the report was that only 1 bird roosted here (as it had been previously as well), I ambushed anyway. The bird was, as I suspected, 8222, who was weighed and released by 430. 1145. Now back here to sit and watch for a stretch. 1155. ♀(!) hawking over across the gully. 1345. No further luck, even with the recording. This will obviously be difficult, but at least it continues to appear as though a ♀ is here and, theoretically, at least, identifiable. 1350. Success! A disturbed call from up-the hill off to the left (S) of the granary enticed me to walk up. And I was successful in seeing an Unbanded ♀ in a small Live Oak just up a short ways, who may have been sapsucking here. In any case, this would appear to be yet more evidence that the ♀ here is not 8444 but unbanded. 3 July Add: 8222. Founded group ~18 May (see R1 notes) ♀ Unbanded. " " 24 August Two birds roosted in the nesthole tonight - ripe for another ambush!
