Melanerpes formicivorus
Arnold 1
Hastings Reservation
22 April
915. Well, flushing the mate from the Starling nest, I went up to the hole in the VO granary here and cleared the hole up. Uncovered were: 4 eggs, which were unceremoniously dumped, a pile of straw used as a nest, which was also cleared, and, → the remains, more or less mummified, of 9422, bands and all. She was intact, though pretty well gone, and apparently died in her "sleep" while roosting sometime back. Thus, I can change her fate, at least, from "Abandoned about" to "Died about."
The amazing amount of straw and miscellaneous garbage stuffed into this hole by the Starlings clearly would have rendered the hole quite useless to AUD, possibly permanently.
1120. ♀ flushed from the big VO below the granary. ♀♀ub.
25 April
915. 2 birds, a ♂ and a ♀, in the tree at the top of Arnold field between A1, B0, Bianca, and LA2 (near the A1 '75 nest tree).
28 April
Ron watched here this morning and saw both birds.
1240. Both birds on or in nest hole in granary!
29 April
1910. Bird(s) roosting in the '78 nest hole. Hurrah! It didn't take them long to reclaim this hole once I shagged out the Starlings.
5 May
Both birds roosted in the hole at Big Tree where I ambushed last fall (in the VO near A1, not BigTree itself) the last 2 nights. Today I ambushed, but things mucked up and I didn't get my birds.
9 May
1600. Flushed 2 birds from the Big Tree area; both flew to the fence line area up at Keep Out (toward the forest).
