I want to note here that as of this date our captive
1-yr-old β Acorn Woodpecker Winnie is molting her 9th
primaries, and her secondaries from both sides inβ
e.g. her 4th and 8th simultaneously with #s 5,6, and 7 old!
11 October 1320. Wandered over on Blonquist's to Corral Viejo Canyon.
The roundup: Blontwo: no sign of birds or stores.
CV Cyn#1: No birds seen. Few if any stores.
The limb in which the nest hole was located this spring fell; no
sign of casualties.
CV Cyn#2: Conspicuously lacking stores, though
there are birds here and the place is loaded with acorns. A
likely place for a fall nest.
12 October 1045. Back over on Blonquist's, I first watched the large dead
granary out by the road in Corral Viejo Cyn and saw 25 birds,
none banded (see Gazebo notes). I then watched at CV Cyn#2
for 20 min. or so, but saw no one go to the nest tree and
discovered no sign of a nest.
14 October 1645. Up at PO Hill #1 I flushed one bird and saw some stores
but noted no sign of a nest.
8 November 1400. On the way down from the Arnold I noted that the
granary along the road at ARF (past the old ARF tree
itself) has stored acorns, as does ARF, too. There are birds
around here.
9 November 1300. Up from the road towards Warp 5 is an unbanded β (in the
targe VO). At Warp 5 itself are stored acorns (not a lot, but some).
The β plus someone else probably reside here.
10 November Our pet woodpecker Winnie proved to me today that
