1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 21 October 1710. Walked by the hole to see both babies still inside looking out. They did, however, appear as though they'd fledge if I did so much as give them a wary look. 22 October Watched the nest from 745-1015; see compilation on back. Both babies appeared to still be in the nest, but they are really stretching things and should surely fledge later today. 386 did not feed at all; most feedings were of acorn bits. 1700. Walked by the hole to see a baby still inside looking out at me. Maybe they're planning on spending the winter in the nest hole? 23 October 1750. At last nobody is in the hole as I wander by. 13 November 1725. Bird looking out of the nest hole; birds are clearly roosting here. 16 December 1600. Two birds flushed from the granary when I can to count stores: Tree 1: 260 Tree 2: 1632 These birds have pretty well filled their granary. I also took a sample of 80 acorns and replaced them with specimens of my own. Up at School Hill "B" there are no stored acorns and no sign of any inhabitants.
