1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate Hastings Reservation 28 December 955. On my way up to the Arnold, I stopped here when I noted some unusual activity around. There The moment I got out of the truck I counted 7-8 birds in flight, chasing and so forth - the clear signs of a Revolution. So I stopped long enough to try and see what was up. In the Gate sycamore (primarily) were 3 birds, quite chummy with each other: (1) no leg #58, (2) 3 ub, and (3) 9 Blk-yel/Blk #519 - the 9 from Valhalla (!). The 9 was being especially solicitous, just as a potential immigrant tends to be. By the time I got these 3 birds the activity seemed somewhat subdued, so I checked over at the Weate area. In the Weate sycamore was one unbanded 9 with a slightly dark eye who hung out there the entire time I watched and even chased away some Dickey birds from the storage areas. Meanwhile there was some more chasing in the area between the sycamores; one additional bird I identified was another unbanded 9. I derived no other relevant information after this point and so left shortly thereafter. The cogent facts seemed to be as follows: (1) 9 ub has disappeared, 9519 appears to be 1st in line to replace her. (2) A minor revolution involving ~5 intruders is attending this event. (3) An ub 9 has meanwhile taken over the WG sycamore while the 3 residents are spending most of their time over in the Gate tree. Why this should be when all the stores are over at the Weate tree is beyond me. 1520. Passed by on the way back down - there is still some chasing and activity here.
