Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation 10 January It was too dark to count stores but I was able to get a sample of 26 acorns from the main granary. 19 January Counted stores: Main tree: 912 Misc.: 185 Doing very well - they still have enough such that they are relatively hard to count. 5 February 1050. Watching from hide. 1110. 10" DBRW #222. 1128. ② ③ or/DB-yel #294. ⑤ ⑦ wh/tie #183. 1301. ④ ⑤ Red / #295(?). Nobody coming to the granary - birds mostly hawkling by or across the road when here at all. 1303. ⑤ ⑥ M (or-ld) #293. Seen well. 1340. Leaving. These birds are being pretty scarce - I don't really know what they're up to. Obviously several have disappeared from October, however. 9 February 1545. ③ 222 in Sugarbush by the road. 1550. ③ 222 and ② ③ wh/blk #183 on other side. 1551. ③ ③ or/DB-wh #294 plus 2 others up on side of Pohill now. 1605. A ④ here: ④ M'; presumably ④ 293 but I haven't been able to see any other bands yet. Possibly sapsucking up there. 11 February Purge: ③ 354 ③ 406 ③ 407 ③ 409. All last seen 4 Oct. 1978, gone by 11 December 1978 (When Ron Watched: Disappeared about 7 November ± 1 month. 4 March 1130. Counted stores: Main tree: 810 ?
