1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiceivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 6 January 1100. Flushed 1 bird as I came down to count stores: 16Q (all in tree 2). Also took my sample of 25 acorns, returning a much juicer set in their stead. 5 February 1530. Watching. 1600. 8 down below the granaries hawk ing. 1620. Finally: 8 cp/m #86; got him when he flew down to chase a june out of tree 2. Leaving, Still noone else here. 17 February 1440. 18 here when I came to count stores: 123. 12 March 1430. 8 cp/ight #86 sitting in the low perch tree behind the storage area. 1545. Finished redoing the hide. No activity up here to lead me to suspect that anyone besides 886 is living here. There are still some stores remaining here. 27 March Ron noted 886 (and he alone) up here today, sap sucking in a Blue Oak in the forest towards Red House from the hide! 9 April This afternoon I walked up the check the Malaise trap and noted 1) there appear to be no stores remaining here, and 2) a 8 was in the '75-6-7 nest hole roosting early. 10 April 1430. First I added 106 acorns to the granary here (which was indeed out) and then looked over at the old nest hole only to discover a 9 looking out!! 12 April 1120. Watching from hide. 1132. 8 down in the perch tree below the granary. Flew off. 1200. Carrick? Maybe someone in the granary. Someone is Carricking from down the hill a ways.
