Melanerpes formicivorus
Buckeye
(26 June) facial pattern more or less matching what Larry described
for 8424. I therefore conclude with reasonable though
not absolute certainty that 8424 spent the night in the nest.
By the way, I also checked the granary here and could find
no stores to speak of. Note, however, that Larry had seen
birds getting acorns from here a while back.
30 June Watched the nest today from 1530-1700. See compilation
on back.
1 July Watched here from 1400-1630, after which I went up
and banded the 2 babies remaining babies, now #503 and 504.
2 July Time to bring this group up to date:
① 8252, the first of the Chongo 88 to appear here, I
am going to change to → Moved as Adult on 1 April (±1 month)
This change is somewhat arbitrary but fits in slightly
better with the later arrivals of the other 2 88. In truth,
the latter estimate (see 28 April) is more accurate.
② Add: 8234, 8424. Larry has fairly good notes to
indicate that 8252 preceded these birds. Though
he saw 8234 first on 28 April and 8424 not until 17 May,
there is less evidence to suggest that these birds came
separately. Thus both → Moved as Adults 21 April (±1 wk).
Purge: 8481. Last seen at the ambush of 7 February.
Gone for sure by 14 April → Dis. about 12 March ±1 month.
5 July Watched the nest from 930-1230. See compilation on back.
7 July Watched the nest from 1410-1640. " " "
Note the appearance of 8371 (seen also by Larry here a few days
ago), formerly of Chongo. [Note that this bird disappeared
