Melanerpes formicivorus
Arnold 3
Hastings Reservation
(29 July) functional, besides being one of the largest granaries
on the Reservation, and will be greatly missed. Not only
by me, of course, but also presumably by the 2 birds
living here. Possibly they'll move over to UA2 and use
the granary there. This wouldn't be too much of a change
since they've been using that area for roosting, nesting,
and foraging for many months now. In any case, the
fact remains that Arnold 3 as an entity to itself, once one
of the major groups on the Reservation, is now pretty much
diliterated.
7 August 1030. Two birds who were up in the Top area of Arnold Field
(the crest where LA2, UA2, & A1 meet) flushed to the edge of UA2,
where I saw that at least one was banded (?P207??). They
both then flushed over to A3, and I am willing to guess that
they were probably the A3 birds.
26 August 900. Came up here with Ron and Nancy after Ron reported a
Revolution activity at UA2 between the 2 A3 birds
(defending the better granary) and several unbanded birds.
See UA2 notes.
5 October 1545. Nothing noticed here in passing.
15 October 1705. One or 2 birds up in the trees over on the Lambert
side of the fence; otherwise there are stores now at
UA2 and I would guess that this group has "moved"
over there, as expected.
