Melanerpes formicivorus
Buckeye Hastings Reservation
22 April 1820. Flushed at least one and probably 2 birds from the granary on arrival (wakes heard on the way up). Larry reports that birds are eating some acorns here, so they apparently do have some stores left.
1910. All 3 birds roosted here on schedule in the [low hole] where I ambushed in February.
28 April Larry Hankes has now reported seeing ♂252, formerly of Chongo, here both on 14 April and again today. In neither case did he appear to be intruding. Thus, at least for the time being, I will add him here:
Add: ♂252. Not here 7 February, here on 14 April → Moved as Adult on 12 March 1979 (± 1 month).
25 June 1345. Lo and behold, these birds apparently have a nest with babies in the tree across from Chongo over on the far side of the ravine from the granary here (see Chongo notes). We obviously need some serious catching up here!
1600. Indeed it is a nest and there are 3 babies, 2 well along and the 3rd dubious. I marked them and measured their wings. I'm also assuming that this is Buckeye's nest, though I suppose we won't know for sure until we watch here.
26 June 1900. Watching the nest, ostensibly for roosting but I'll take whatever I can get.
2000. Noone came until just before dark, at which point all 3 ♂♂ (38234, 252, and 424) came virtually simultaneously and then all left almost as abruptly as they'd arrived. Then a few minutes later a bird returned who I was not ♂252, [illegible] almost certainly was not ♂234, and 3) had a very distinct
