1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation 12 June Watched the nest here from 1500-1700. The big news is that the babies have hatched and the birds are now bringing food. See compilation on back. 13 June Watched the nest from 730-1000 today. See compilation on back. Afterwards, I checked the granary and was able to find no reasonable-looking stores remaining. I then went up to take a brief look at Valhalla and found, much to my amazement, a bird in the hole! This is no doubt where the other R1 88 have disappeared to! See Valhalla notes for more details. 18 June 800. 9269 in the granary here as I walked up to Valhalla. 940. Watching granary from hide. 1040. None at all passing by here. Leaving. 1045. Checked up at Warp 5, but saw no sign of stores, nests, or birds. 20 June 900. 9269 in Sycamore perch tree below R1 granary. 915. Meanwhile they're at least 2 other birds in the upper part of the territory above the granary (presumably Valhalla). 925. 9269 now in the trees just above the Black Oak (above the granary) Now with a 2nd ♀(!): 2♀ DB-wm(ny)#444.(could she have been the Valhalla ♀ after all?). 1000. 9269 now in the field by the (former) nest. 1020. Back in the Sycamore below the granary: 9269 and 3♀ 486. See Valhalla notes concerning a few further observations from up there.
