1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation. (10 October) days old (eyes not quite open yet) and are very nearly the same developmentally. Both were weighed and measured and returned by 1630. This is this fall's 3rd nest now, and the latest to date. 12 October Watched the nest here from 1500-1730; see compilation on back. After this I went up closer to watch roosting, and found that *2 birds roosted in the hole: 8184 first, followed shortly by a 2nd, unidentified bird, presumably 868. Essentially no brooding of the babies was taking place. 14 October Watched the nest from 915-1145; see compilation on back. Totals were as follows: Total time watched: 150 min. 8184 868 8? 8265 8446 7? Tonight at dusk (1755) 8184 first entered the hole, followed a minute later by a 2nd and then a 3rd bird, all 3 of whom remained up until I left! 16 October 1800. Tonight 2 birds entered the hole prior to 8184; when the latter landed at the hole one of those inside left. Thus, apparently 2 birds spent the night in the nest this time: 8184 plus (only presumably) 868. 21 October Watched here today from 930-1200. Things were still
