1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Hastings Reservation 4 January 1445. Watching from hide. 1530. This doesn't appear to be the day for this- Leaving. 6 January 1200. Watching. 1235. ① ③♂♂/♀(n) #479 here eating an acorn plus 2nd ③. 1345. ②③♂♂/♀/de-red #301. 1350. ② here briefly. Both ③♂ here now. 1400. Leaving. I need a better watch still but it certainly seems likely that there are only the 3 birds here. 17 February There are some (but not a lot) of acorns remaining here- probably ~300 or less. 1 April A bird is in the '78 nest hole, possibly roosting early at 1750. 12 April 1600. None in any holes this time; none for sure seen in passing. This group is also out of stores, along with most everyone else. 19 April 1715. Nobody here in/out of holes in passing. However, upon close examination of several dead limbs it seemed as though there may be a few (and only a few) stores remaining here after all. 20 April Purge: j437. Last seen (by Pam) on 7 July 1978 → Not seen here after 78/7/7 (group not watched until winter, really). 27 April 1725. ③ in '78 nest hole. Finally - a nest? 1726. Flushed the ③ out - a 2nd Girl - a ② - here also. Looks bad for the nest theory, at least for now. 7 May 1600. Flushed 2 birds out of the '78 nest hole on this gloomy afternoon. 9 May 1150. ③479 at the edge of the hole. Something may be up here.
